Conditional Sentences and Subordinate Clauses. Sometimes the action in a sentence depends on something else happening first. Here are some sample sentences to show you how it works. If you hover your mouse arrow over the speaker icon you can hear the sentence spoken.

Ma thugann tú a ndóthain le n-ithe dhóibh, beid sásta.	If you give them enough to eat, they will be satisfied.
Má dheinid a ndícheall, éireoidh leo, agus mara ndeinid, ní éireoidh.	If they do their best, they will succeed and if they don’t they won’t.
Maran maith leis dul i dteannta na ndaoine eile, féadfaidh sé dul ann ina aonar.	If he does not like to go with the others, he can go there alone.
Más rud é go bhfaca sé an tionóisc, is aige atá a fhios cad a tharla.	If in fact he saw the accident, it is he who knows best what happened.
Dá bhfaighimís caoi chuige, bheadh an obair déanta i n-am againn.	If we had had an opportunity, we should have done the work in time.
Dá dtuigfeá i gceart é, do ghlacfá a chomhairle.	If you had understood him correctly, you would have taken his advice.
Dá mbeadh an lá inné go breá, do bheimís amuigh sa ghairdín.	If yesterday had been fine, we should have been out in the garden.
Má bhíonn an lá amáireach fliuch, fanfaimíd sa bhaile.	If tomorrow is wet, we shall stay at home.
Dá mba rud é go mbeadh an talamh le díol, do cheannóinn é.	If in fact the land were for sale, I should buy it.
Dá mba ná beinn ann, ní fhéadfainn fáilte do chur roimis.	If I had not been there, I could not have welcomed him.
Mara mbeadh go rabhas ann go luath, ní fheicfinn i n-aon chor é.	If I had not been there early, I should not have seen him at all.
Conas a thuigfeadh duine an Ghaeilge mara bhfoghlaimeodh sé í?	How could a person understand Irish unless he learned it?
Is dócha go mbeidh sioc anocht againn.	We shall probably have frost tonight.
Cad ’na thaobh gur chuaigh Seán go dtí an baile mór?	Why has John gone to town?
Shíl sé go mb’fhéidir go mbeadh Caitilín ag teacht abhaile.	He thought that perhaps Kathleen would be coming home.
Do cheapamair ná tiocfadh sí go ceann coicís.	We thought she would not come for a fortnight.
Do shíleas-sa go mbeadh sí anso fé thráthnóna.	I thought she would be here by evening.
B’fhéidir go dtiocfadh sí fós.	Perhaps she will come yet.
Cad ’na thaobh nár fhan sí sa bhaile?	Why did she not stay at home?
Deir a máthair gur deacair í a shásamh.	Her mother says it is hard to satisfy her.
Bhí eagla uirthi go mbeadh uaigneas ar Mháire.	She was afraid that Mary would be lonely.
Cá bhfios di go mbeidh Máire ann roimpi?	How does she know that Mary will be there to meet her?
Do scríobh sí chúithi agus dúirt go mbeadh sí ag feitheamh léi.	She wrote to her and said she would be expecting her.
Fanfaidh sí go dtí go mbeidh Caitilín ina teannta.	She will wait until Kathleen is with her.
Ba chóir go mbeadh áthas ar Chaitiín.	Kathleen ought to be delighted.
Ní rabhas i bhfad ann nuair a tháinig uaigneas orm.	I was not long there when I became lonely.
Theip orm an obair a dhéanamh cé gur dheineas mo dhícheall.	I failed to do the work although I did my best.
Do chuas go dtí é chun go labharfainn leis.	I went up to him in order to speak to him.
Bhí sé chomh maith aige an obair a chríochnú, ó thosnaigh sé i n-aon chor.	It was as well for him to finish the work, since he began it at all.
Níor chuas ann toisc go raibh gnó sa bhaile agam.	I did not go there as I had business at home.
Bhí sé chomh dorcha gur cheapamair go raibh an oíche tagtha.	It was so dark that we thought night had come.
Bíonn an fear ciallmhar ina thost nuair ná bíonn pioc le rá aige.	The wise man is silent when he has nothing to say.
Má thagann tú go luath amáireach tabharfad duit an t-airgead.	If you come early tomorrow, I shall give you the money.
Thabharfainn duit inné é dá dtagthá i n-am.	I should have given it to you yesterday, if you had come in time.
Tair más féidir leat é, agus maran féidir, raghad-sa chút.	Come if it is possible, and if it is not possible, I shall go to you.
Má labhrann sé go mall, b’fhéidir go dtuigfimís é.	If he speaks slowly, perhaps we shall understand him.
Más mian leo teacht, beidh fáilte rompu, ach ní iarrfad-sa orthu teacht.	If they wish to come, they will be welcome, but I shall not ask them to come.
Cad ’na thaobh go n-íosfaidís feoil más fearr leo iasc?	Why should they eat meat, if they prefer fish?
Dá ndéarfaimís é sin chuirfeadh sé ana-fhearg orthu.	If we said that, they would be very angry.
Más rud é go ndúradar é sin ní raibh an ceart acu.	If in fact they said that, they were wrong.
Mara mbeadh go bhfaca ann é, ní chreidfinn go raibh sé i mBaile Átha Cliath.	If it were not for the fact that I saw him there, I should not have believed that he was in Dublin.
Conas a chloisfidís an scéal mara mbeadh gur innis duine éigin dóibh é?	How would they have heard the story, unless someone told it to them?
Cad ’na thaobh go bhfuil Máirtín ag dul go Corcaigh?	Why is Martin going to Cork?
Is dóigh leis go mbeidh an bád ag dul ó dheas seachtain ón lá inniu.	He thinks that the boat will be going south a week from to-day.
Deir sé gur mian leis dul i n-éineacht lena dheartháir.	He says he wants to go together with his brother.
Tá a fhios agam gur mhaith leis dul ann, ach caithfidh sé fanúint go dtí amanathar.	I know that he would like to go there, but he must wait till the day after tomorrow.
Is eagal leo go gcreidfidh daoine an rud a deir sé.	They are afraid that people will believe the thing that he says.
Abair leis go bhfanfaimíd go dtí go mbeidh sé ullamh.	Tell him that we shall wait till he is ready.
Cad ’na thaobh nár chuais ar scoil inné?	Why did you not go to school yesterday?
Deir an máistir ná rabhais ann.	The master says that you were not there.
Ba chóir go mbeadh náire ort!	It would be right to be ashamed!
Nuair a chonaic sé na fir ag teacht, d’éirigh sé chun fáilte a chur rompu.	When he saw the men coming, he stood up to welcome them.
Do thugamair béile dhóibh sarar imíodar.	We gave them a meal before they went away.
Níor fhanadar i bhfad mar bhí tuirse orthu.	They did not stay long for they were tired.
Bhí an oíche chomh dorcha gur chuamair amú.	The night was so dark that we went astray.
Níor cheannaíomair aon ní toisc ná raibh aon airgead againn.	We did not buy any thing because we had no money.
Cé go bhfuil misneach agat níl puinn céille agat.	Although you have courage, you have not much sense.
Bíonn na páistí ag gearán nuair ná bíonn aon ní le déanamh acu.	The children complain when they have nothing to do.
