The Second Conjugation. Nouns are put in groups called declensions and for verbs, conjugations. Here are some sample sentences to show you how they work. If you hover your mouse arrow over the speaker icon you can hear the sentence spoken.

Do thosnaíodar.	They began.
éirímíd.	We rise.
Do dhiúltódh sé.	He would refuse.
D'iompaíodar.	They turned.
Do cheannaigh sé.	He bought.
Críochnód an obair amáireach.	I shall finish the work tomorrow.
D'fhiafraigh sí dá hathair cad a bhí ar siúl.	She asked her father what was going on (happening).
Níor éirigh Tomás fós ach éireoidh sé gan mhoill.	Thomas has not got up yet, but he will get up soon.
Imíd leo abhaile tar éis na scoile.	They go off home after school.
Ceannaíonn mo mháthair an t-im uair sa tseachtain.	My mother buys butter once a week.
Nuair a bhead ag caint le Tadhg tairiceod deich bpuint dó ar an ngamhain.	When I am talking to Tim I will offer him ten pounds for the calf.
Bainfead an scian san den pháiste nó gortóidh sé é féin.	I will take that knife from the child or he will hurt himself.
Abair amhrán, a Thomáis, agus ansan imeoimíd abhaile.	Sing a song, Tom, and then we shall go home.
Do thosnaigh na hiascairí ag iascaireacht go moch ar maidin.	The fishermen began fishing early this morning.
Tosnóimíd-ne amáireach le cúnamh Dé.	We will begin tomorrow, with the help of God.
Do bhailíomair an t-airgead sarar imigh na daoine.	We collected the money before the people left.
Bíonn aonach sa bhaile mhór uair sa mhí agus margadh uair sa tseachtain.	There is a fair in the town once a month and a market once a week.
Blianta ó shin do chaitheadh na daoine oícheanta geimhridh ag insint scéalta, ach d'éiríodar as an nós san.	Years ago people used to spend winter evenings telling stories, but they gave up that custom.
Osclód an fhuinneog agus imeoidh an deatach so.	I shall open the window and this smoke will go away.
D'fhiafraíodar cathain a thosnódh an ceol.	They inquired when the music would begin.
Tosnóidh sé nuair a bheimíd ullamh.	It will begin when we are ready.
Tosnaímíd.	We begin.
Críochnóid siad.	They will finish.
Níor dhiúltaigh sé.	He did not refuse.
Ar insis?	Did you tell?
Do cheannaíodar.	They bought.
Do cheannóimís.	We would buy.
An n-iompóidís?	Would they turn?
Ar thosnaíodar?	Did they begin?
Ní neosadh sé.	He would not tell.
Gort óidh tú.	You will hurt.
Ceannód na leabhair amáireach.	I shall buy the books tomorrow.
éireoimíd go moch agus críochnóimíd an obair.	We shall get up early and finish the work.
Fiafród dem mháthair cé bheidh ag teacht.	I shall ask my mother who will be coming.
D'iompaíodar an féar inné agus iompóid siad arís inniu é.	They turned the hay yesterday, and they will turn it again today.
Tosnóidh an ceol nuair a bheidh na ceoltóirí ullamh.	The music will begin when the musicians are ready.
Baileoimíd an t-airgead sara ligfimíd na daoine isteach.	We shall collect the money before we let (fut.) the people in.
D'oscail sé an leabhar agus thosnaigh sé ag léamh.	He opened the book and (he) began to read.
Nuair a bhíonn na hoícheanta fada imreann na daoine cártaí.	When the nights are (habit.) long people play cards.
Ní imreoid siad aon chártaí anocht.	They will not play (any) cards tonight.
